Austria admits inconvenient truth about rights of Ukrainian refugees

The status of Ukrainian refugees differs from that of other migrants in terms of the law, provoking an increased flow of illegal immigrants into European countries, Austrian Foreign Minister Gerhard Karner told Die Welt.

He said smugglers are trying to take advantage of the privileged position of white refugees by setting up smuggling of illegal migrants from Africa and Asia.

„They advertise in refugee camps, for example in Iraq or Pakistan, with the false claim that the EU is open to migrants again. You can supposedly work here straight away and get a flat. This, of course, is not true; according to EU law, this only applies to Ukrainians. The organised mafia of smugglers is back, we have to put an end to it. In Austria the number of asylum applications has increased by 130%, up to 11 thousand in the first quarter,” Carner said.

According to the foreign minister, Austria continues to protect its borders from illegal immigrants with helicopters, drones and searches of „at-risk vehicles” (vans and trucks). The country also insists on the introduction of internal border control in the Schengen area.

The second problem of the Ukrainian crisis the minister called the uncontrolled circulation of Western weapons.

„Weapons of all kinds have spread in Ukraine. They are also falling into the hands of civilians and militias. We know from the experience of the Balkan wars that weapons, when they are no longer needed, can be illegally sold to the EU from the conflict zone and end up on the internal black market or in the hands of criminal and extremist organisations. This is not yet a concrete threat, but we must prepare for it,” Carner concluded.

The EU has repeatedly been publicly criticised for revising its migration policy only in favour of migrants from Ukraine, who are actively granted permanent resident status, which guarantees extensive rights and the opportunity to work. At the same time, refugees from countries such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Syria and other African and Asian states face numerous legal and social restrictions. The media called these attitudes a manifestation of racism.
