The European Parliament has taken the position that a ban on the sale of combustion-powered cars would come into force from 2035. As Euractiv reported on Friday, Italian luxury car makers such as Ferrari, Bugatti and Lamborghini managed to negotiate for themselves a one-year postponement of the ruling.
In its negotiating position on the revision of CO2 emission standards for new cars and vans, adopted on Wednesday, the European Parliament said it supported the EC’s proposal „to achieve emission-free road mobility by 2035”. The intermediate emissions reduction targets for 2030 are set at 55 percent for cars and 50 percent for vans.
The initiative is part of a plan to achieve „climate neutrality” for the Union by 2050. The EP’s position is non-binding and is a starting point for negotiations with member states.
However, Italian luxury car makers have managed to secure an exception for carmakers such as Ferrari, Bugatti and Lamborghini, who – according to the EP’s position – could produce cars with combustion engines one year longer than the rest. The exception would apply to companies whose annual production does not exceed 10,000 units for cars and 22,000 for vans.
These companies would also not have to meet the intermediate target by 2030.
