French health service fears invasion of Japanese beetles

The French National Agency for Sanitary Security (Anses) has warned of the threat of invasion by the Japanese bunting, a vicious pest of hundreds of plant species.

According to the agency, the Japanese broom beetle (Popillia japonica), which belongs to the subfamily of bread beetles, was already detected in Italy in 2014 and in Switzerland in 2017. Thus, the probability of its penetration into the territory of France is „very high.

The beetle can prey on more than 400 types of plants, including valuable food plants such as plums, apples, grapes, corn, soybeans and asparagus. It devours the leaves of maples and poplars and ornamental plants such as roses.

Phytosanitary experts warn that it is almost impossible to prevent the Japanese beetle in France: it is favored by its temperature conditions, the plant life matches its eating habits, and the beetle is easy to move – it can fly or „hitchhike” on any biological or mechanical carrier.

Because of the high threat level, Anses calls for active control to begin as soon as the insect is detected. The Agency recommends placing traps equipped with sex pheromones and floral attractants along the border with countries that have already become the habitat of the cricket and near points of entry into the country (ports, airports, roads).
The Agency notes that it was efforts to eradicate the Japanese broom beetle in the initial stage of invasion that proved successful in the U.S. states of Oregon and California.
