General elections opened in France

Polling stations opened for voting in the French National Assembly (lower house of parliament) elections on Sunday at 8am local time.

The election will take place in two rounds, on 12 and 19 June. They will elect 577 members of the National Assembly (lower house of parliament) for a five-year term out of almost 6,300 parliamentary candidates.

To qualify for the second round, a candidate must win at least 12.5% of the votes of registered voters in his/her constituency. Victory is also possible in the first round, but to qualify, a candidate must win the support of an absolute majority of voters or at least a quarter of registered voters.

In the second round, a simple majority of votes is sufficient.
However, the election could take place with a record low turnout. It is predicted to be as low as 46%.

Polling stations will close at 18.00 in the regions and at 20.00 local time in large cities.

The first preliminary results will be announced immediately based on exit polls. The counting of votes is usually fast, and the official results are known in the evening of the same day or on Monday evening.

The presidential coalition „Ensemble!” (Ensemble!), which brings together French President Emmanuel Macron’s Renaissance Party (formerly called Go Republic!), the centrist Democratic Movement party and the centre-right Horizon and Action parties. Also taking part in the election is the left-wing coalition New Popular Ecological and Social Union (Nupes), which includes Jean-Luc Melanchon’s France Undefeated, the Socialist Party, the Communist Party and the Europe-Environment-Greens party. Marin Le Pen’s Rassemblement Nationale and Eric Zemmur’s République Nationale parties are also on the ballot.

Polls indicate that the main battle will be between the presidential coalition Together! and the leftist coalition led by Melanchon. Macron’s party may, however, lose its current one-seat majority in the lower house.
