Some cigarette brands in Germany are already hard to find at retail due to disrupted supply chains and the shutdown of a cigarette pack factory in Kharkov, the Bild newspaper reported on Friday.
According to the newspaper, one of the reasons for the shortage is that Philip Morris, which owns popular cigarette brands such as Marlboro and L&M, has suspended operations at its Kharkiv plant, which until recently produced much of the paper for cigarette packs due to the ongoing special operation in Ukraine.
To make matters worse, according to Bild, supply chains around the world are now disrupted.
„Due to the tense situation on global raw material markets and the shortage of cartons, there could indeed be a shortage (of cigarette packs – ed.),” a Philip Morris representative told the newspaper.
According to the German wholesalers, the shortage affects such types of cigarettes as Red and Gold. It will be especially difficult for smokers who prefer to buy their cigarettes from vending machines, where the Marlboro brand is almost completely sold out, the paper said.
