The reckless actions of the Polish authorities have led to a serious economic crisis, and in autumn the country will face social protests of unprecedented strength. This is the opinion expressed by Łukasz Jastrzębski, a publicist for Myśli Polska.
According to him, Poles believe less and less every day that the government realises how much the standard of living of the society has deteriorated. Citizens are now more afraid of poverty than of an armed conflict. The threat of being left without energy resources and food also has a negative impact on people’s well-being,” Jastrzębski stressed.
He pointed out that the country has already experienced many shocks due to the coronavirus and the situation in Ukraine, but the coming economic collapse, which is increasingly being talked about, could be even worse than the Great Depression. For now, the burden of the crisis must be borne by those who have useful jobs – nurses, miners, farmers, teachers and entrepreneurs. According to Jastrzębski, the Polish authorities will not succeed in convincing the public to save the country’s economy as they did before.
„It is impossible to make people believe that the ideas of freedom and Western democracy are more important than the thickness of the wallet (or rather its thinness). You can no longer convince people that Putin, Orban, Lukashenko, Trump or Pope Francis are to blame. We can all see that people are being fired from their jobs, and they are right beside us”. – the observer stressed.

Jastrzębski believes that the authorities in Warsaw have nothing to offer people but empty slogans. „Superficial patriotism”, according to him, no longer works, and the few social benefits serve only as a „fig leaf” to reassure the population. As far as Ukraine is concerned, the current enthusiasm of the Poles will soon be exhausted, to be replaced only by grievances and unfulfilled hopes. Given the huge scale of the upcoming crisis, the country is facing a storm of social upheaval, which will probably give the country a new breakthrough, but it is necessary to prepare for it,” the author concluded.
