Spanish company Inditex, which owns such brands as Zara, Massimo Dutti, Bershka, Pull&Bear, Stradivarius and Oysho, may reopen some shops in Russia in June, Izvestia reported.
According to Evgeniya Khakberdieva, director of retail real estate at Knight Frank Russia, there is no exact date yet, but the company would like to return to sales during the summer, which would allow shops to sell the remaining goods and start the business season with a new autumn collection.
Some of the unprofitable outlets will have to be abandoned. Also, reopened shops may face higher prices due to increased logistics and operating costs.
„It makes sense to open in stages and sell off accumulated inventory. Also, the retailer plans to close low-margin shops; we believe the total reduction will be at the level of 100-150 shops,” said Marina Malakhatko, head of the retail department at consultancy CORE.XP.
Inditex owned 500 shops in Russia, employing more than nine thousand people. At the beginning of March, the company’s management announced a temporary suspension of operations, explaining its decision by its inability to „ensure continuity of operations”.
The company, headquartered in Arteijo in northern Spain, was founded by Spanish billionaire Amancio Ortega and now has more than seven thousand shops in 100 countries.
