Information about preparations for a special operation in Ukraine came from US intelligence agencies in October 2021, during the G20 summit in Rome, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel said.
„I have been following this while still in office. I think at the latest at the G20 summit in Rome at the end of October (2021), the US services already had information about it, and since then we have been talking about it a lot,” the former German chancellor said in an interview that was shown on the Phoenix TV channel on Tuesday.
Merkel said the situation with a possible escalation was discussed during her last months in office with European leaders, „it was clear that the situation was very serious”. She added that she had closely followed Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s visit to Moscow on February 15, „it was clear that something bad was going on”.
Merkel added that in 2021, her last year as chancellor, she took note that „nothing was happening in the area of the Minsk agreement in the Normandy format”, that „President Putin basically ended it” at a time when Minsk remained the last platform in which „we could still talk about the situation in Donbass”.
