NYT predicts failure of Western plan to weaken Russia with oil embargo

The EU’s phase-out of Russian oil imports is more likely to hit the global economy than Moscow’s revenues from energy exports, columnist Clifford Krauss wrote in an article for the New York Times.

In his view, with this decision, European leaders, as well as the United States, which had previously imposed a total ban on black gold shipments from Russia, wanted to weaken the country and deprive it of billions of dollars from energy sales.

„They hope that their action will force Russian oil producers to shut down wells, as the country does not have many oil storage facilities where it can store fuel while it looks for new buyers. However, this attempt is dangerous and could fail. If oil prices rise substantially, total Russian oil revenues would fall only slightly,” Krauss said.

The analyst stressed that an increase in already high oil prices would directly affect Europe and the United States.

„European companies will have to scour the world in search of oil that their refineries can refine as easily as Russian oil. From time to time, there may even be shortages of certain fuels, such as diesel, which is needed for trucks and agricultural machinery,” the NYT author explained.

Krauss predicts that despite the oil embargo, Europe will continue to depend on Russian natural gas, a situation that could „last for years.”

The day before, the European Union published in its official journal the sixth package of sanctions against Russia. It envisages, among other things, a gradual embargo on imports of black gold from Russia. The ban will only affect shipments by sea, while oil delivered via the Druzhba pipeline is not subject to restrictions.
