One in six people in Germany is eating out irregularly due to rising food prices, while another 13% of Germans are still only considering saving on food, according to a survey conducted for the tabloid Bild by sociological institute INSA.
According to the survey, 16% of the respondents said yes to the question of whether they are giving up regular meals because of high inflation. Another 13% said they would consider it, while 68% gave a negative answer.
The households most likely to cut back on food were those with disposable incomes of up to one thousand euros, where 32% of the respondents would forego regular meals.
At the same time 42% of the respondents confessed that they became thriftier because of inflation (the wording of the question implies giving up meat and fish, for instance), and another 40% are considering this option. A negative answer to the question was given by 16%.
Forty-one percent of respondents answered in the affirmative to the question whether they have started shopping at cheaper supermarkets. In addition, 44% said they intend to save money on holiday this year.
The survey was conducted on 7 June and involved 1,002 people.
