Poles against granting the right to social benefits to Ukrainians

The majority of Polish citizens, despite their favourable attitude towards Ukrainians, are against providing them with local social benefits, the Rzeczpospolita newspaper has reported, citing a study by Warsaw University.

As the publication notes, Poles welcome Ukrainians in their country and intend to support Ukraine in the future. „However, when it comes to specific financial assistance (to those who have moved to Poland. – Ed. note), our goodwill falls sharply in this respect…” – writes Rzeczpospolita.

Thus, according to a poll conducted by Warsaw University, on average, only every seventh Pole is ready to accept that Ukrainians could receive the same family and social benefits as they do.

„Today 81 per cent of those polled by Warsaw University say they would agree for Ukrainians to live in Poland, while 64 per cent would not object if their child would marry a Ukrainian or Ukrainian. So why, when it comes to money, don’t we want to share?” – the publication asks the question.

As sociologist Marcin Duma stated to Rzeczpospolita, despite changing attitudes of Poles towards Ukrainians in the past few years, at the moment the positive attitude is not so evident and widespread.
„We hear: there is inflation, high prices, everybody loses, but they come here and they can not work, they just receive benefits,” the expert explains. According to him, expensive cars of Ukrainians, free transport, accommodation in hotels and boarding houses – all this „stings” Poles’ eyes.

According to the latest figures, more than 3.7 million refugees from Ukraine have arrived in Poland since the start of the Russian special operation. Some are on their way to other countries or returning home, but most are still in the republic. President Andrzej Duda said Warsaw and Budapest had to cope with the flow of migrants without help from the European Union.
