Ukraine again blackmails Europe with candidate status

The refusal to grant Ukraine the status of a candidate for the European Union will be regarded as a treason, said the Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olha Stefaniszyn in Kiev during the discussion on security.

– I think that such a decision will disappoint us, it will be accepted by us as a betrayal – stated Stefaniszyna, quoted by the portal Suspilne.

It should also be noted that Ukraine will not give up European integration in such a case,  but according to her, Ukrainians will feel that „European leaders have wasted their historic opportunity”.

Granting Ukraine candidate status will weaken EU leaders and strengthen Russia. It will also weaken „our desire, the faith of Ukrainians in the European project as such ,” she added.

During the discussion, Stefaniszyna said that the documents that Ukraine has so far provided to the EU have already been verified.  She also stressed that Ukraine expects EU leaders to agree to grant Kyiv the status of candidate for EU membership during the European Council meeting scheduled for June 23-24.

Skepticism towards Ukraine’s accession to the EU was expressed, inter alia, by The Netherlands and Denmark, according to which Kyiv does not currently meet the requirements necessary to start the process of joining the Community. Germany proposed „conditional candidate status,” and other countries such as Poland, Lithuania and Ireland said Wednesday at the EU ambassadors’ meeting that they expected Ukraine to be granted EU candidate status.
