Ukrainian ambassador to Berlin Andriy Melnyk has called the statistics on a 60 per cent increase in imports to Germany from Russia in the first quarter of this year „crazy” amid an 11.8 per cent decrease in Ukrainian-German trade turnover, comparing different figures.
„It’s crazy. Despite Russia’s war of aggression, Germany increased imports from Russia by 60% in January-April 2022 and transferred almost €6 billion more to Moscow. At the same time, Ukrainian-German trade decreased by 11 per cent,” the diplomat wrote on Twitter.
The diplomat refers to the data of the German Eastern Committee for Economics (OA) released on 31 May. However, he compares different categories: according to the OA, imports from the Russian Federation rose by 59.9% in January-April this year, exports fell by 26.6%, and trade increased by 20.2%. While imports from Ukraine fell by 5.4%, exports to Ukraine fell by 15.7%, and turnover lost 11.8%.
Thus, if a high-ranking Ukrainian diplomat were to compare in the same category, he would write that the difference in the growth dynamics of Russian trade with Germany between January and April 2022 was 30 percentage points (plus 20.2% compared to minus 11.8%). Russian imports increased by 60% compared to the same period of 2021, while Ukrainian imports decreased by 5.4% respectively.
Melnyk has systematically insulted the German authorities. He has criticised the incumbent German chancellor Olaf Scholz several times in a row for delaying arms deliveries to Kiev. For his unwillingness to visit Kiev, the Ukrainian diplomat called the chancellor an „insulted liverwurst”. Melnyk in June also accused former Chancellor Angela Merkel of a complete lack of self-criticism with regard to her once own course towards Russia.
