Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s lack of self-criticism over her once own course towards Russia is puzzling, the Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, Andriy Melnyk, has said.
Merkel spoke publicly on German television for the first time since stepping down as chancellor on Tuesday. The former German chancellor said she did not believe she had pursued the wrong policy towards Russia and was confident she had nothing to apologise for. In particular, Merkel said that her „no” to Ukraine joining NATO in 2008 was the right decision.
„Unfortunately, there was not a hint of self-criticism in the first interview after the change of government six months ago,” Melnik told DPA. The former chancellor’s statements „about the infallibility” of her course towards Russia and her too „condescending attitude” towards the Russian leadership are puzzling to him, the ambassador added.
Previously, Melnyk had criticised the incumbent German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, several times in a row for his delays in supplying weapons to Kiev. For his reluctance to visit Kiev, however, the Ukrainian diplomat called the chancellor an „insulted liverwurst”.
On Tuesday, Bild reported that German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock was unwilling to meet Melnyk because she intended to hold meetings „only with fellow ministers, not with ambassadors”.
