When can we expect an interest rate cut? Glapinski gave the date

At the moment, we are gradually approaching the end of our interest rate hike cycle, and there may be an opportunity to cut interest rates in Q4 2023, National Bank of Poland (NBP) president and Monetary Policy Council (MPC) chairman Adam Glapinski conveyed.

„At the moment we are gradually approaching the end of our interest rate hike cycle. We expect inflation to stabilise over the summer and then start to fall, slowly. With the government’s anti-inflationary shields in place, we expect that by the end of next year, in the last quarter, the situation will already be under control. Which does not mean that inflation will be within our inflation target – not yet, but it will be under complete control” – Glapiński informed during a press conference.

I can also announce in advance that in line with our latest analyses, subject to the assumption that no unexpected events will occur, at the end of next year, in the last quarter of next year, there may be a possibility of lowering interest rates – Adam Glapiński noted.

The head of the National Bank of Poland also added that food will continue to grow in price globally and there is no escaping this for the next two years. – Please remember that the NBP cannot regulate the prices of raw materials on global markets with its monetary policy. It can, however, prevent price shocks. We are aiming to ensure that inflation does not last longer than the result of these shocks. It is not the case that every time we raise interest rates, inflation will fall. This is impossible,” he said.
